21-year-old in NSCDC net over alleged killing of employer

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has arrested a 21-year-old man, Soliu Mujeeb, over the alleged kidnap and murder of his employer, Mr. Olarewaju Afolabi, 60.*

The State Commandant, Abbas Nda-Muhammed, disclosed this to newsmen on Sunday in Ilorin.

Nda-Muhammed said the case was reported to the Command’s Tracking Unit on June 11 after Afolabi went missing. The victim had left his residence on June 7 to inspect an electrical wiring site but did not return home.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim’s family later received a ransom demand of N2 million through the victim’s phone,” the Commandant said.

“The family was only able to raise N120,000, which was paid as directed by the caller, who promised to release the victim.”

He said the suspect was traced through “painstaking investigation and financial analysis” of the N120,000 paid into the victim’s Opay account.

During interrogation, Mujeeb confessed to the crime. He told operatives that he worked for the victim as a journeyman in an electrical installation business.

According to the Commandant, the suspect said a dispute arose between him and the victim over missing materials. The victim allegedly forced him to pay for the items in installments by deducting money from his salary.

“He said he was annoyed when the victim started removing money from his salary to pay for the missing material,” Nda-Muhammed said.

The suspect allegedly lured Afolabi to an uncompleted building in Anuoluwapo Community, Kangile, Ilorin East, under the guise of inspecting a new electrical project, and attacked him there.

“After the suspect attacked and killed the victim, he took possession of his phone and SIM card, and subsequently used the victim’s phone to demand ransom from the family,” he said.

Mujeeb later led operatives to the scene, where a shallow grave containing the victim’s remains, his mobile phone, and SIM card was discovered.

Nda-Muhammed said the case is still under investigation and will be transferred to the appropriate security agency for further investigation and prosecution upon conclusion of preliminary findings.

He assured residents that the NSCDC remains committed to protecting lives and property and will continue to work with other security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements.

The Commandant urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely, credible information to security agencies.

Educationist calls on Titcombe Alumni to renovate college facilities

Prof. Kehinde Eniola, Vice-Chancellor of Kogi State University, Kabba, has called on the Titcombe College Egbe Old Students Association (TCEOSA) to renovate college facilities and transform it into one of the most sought-after schools.

Eniola made the call during the 75th Anniversary and Alumni Reunion of TCEOSA, held on Saturday, in Ilorin.

He lauded the efforts of the old students in providing 18 more teachers for key subjects in the school, but urged them to do more by fixing the school facilities.

“There is a need for CCTV cameras in Titcombe College, especially one that is AI-enabled and can trigger an alarm, for security purposes.

“Some facilities like science laboratories, hostels, and sports arenas need to be renovated to top standard, for the students to have a good and strong foundation.

“There are some uncompleted buildings in the school premises that need to be completed for the school activities to be more effective and meaningful,” he added.

The keynote speaker, who is also an alumnus, therefore called for solutions to the problems facing Titcombe College, saying the school should be upgraded to standard so that, 25 years from now, it would still maintain its status.

Another speaker, Mr Sanya Oni, emphasized the need to instill discipline in students, citing the “good old days” when students were required to behave well.

Oni recounted how a teacher openly disciplined his own child who was found violating school rules and regulations in the presence of other students.

He called on teachers to continue instilling discipline in students and urged parents to do the same at home to make the process effective.

The President of TCEOSA, Dr Ruth Adimula, said the 75th anniversary was a celebration of legacy, values, excellence, and enduring impact.

Adimula noted that the College remained a beacon of learning, discipline, character formation, and moral instruction.

She said the education they received while in Titcombe College was beyond academics, as it shaped their values, strengthened their character, and instilled discipline, respect for elders, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility.

The President appreciated the efforts and investments of Senator Sunday Karimi, Senator Representing Kogi West, TCEOSA members, and all stakeholders toward the growth of the College.

Adimula called on the federal government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, to continue prioritizing investment in the education sector, particularly in the funding and effective management of public schools and the welfare of teachers across the federation.

“We have been paying the 18 teachers their monthly salaries for the past four years and we have plans for more years in the future, under our Teachers Intervention Programme (TIP).

“We have set up a management team that has performed impressively and we have enough money to pay the teachers salaries for another one year and are still donating more,” she said.

Adimula said that TIP was inaugurated in April 2022, to address the issue of insufficient teachers in Titcombe College to teach students.

“Teachers were employed to teach subjects such as Mathematics, Chemistry, English, Civic Education, Biology, Agric Science and other subjects to improve academic performance of the students both in internal and external examinations,” she said.

The President also revealed that the association also built a multi-million

Computer-Based Test Centre in Titcombe College premises, in collaboration with Sen. Sunday Karimi and approved by JAMB.

She said that the CBT centre had already started serving students around the community to write their JAMB and other external examinations.

“The first JAMB-UTME examination was held successfully in 2026, with approximately 1,250 candidates. Also, in March, the Midwifery Qualifying Professional Examinations was held hitch free.

“The Centre is open for training, online examinations, result checking, and live for retired officers.

“Titcombe College students and teachers now access the centre for classroom teachings and training. We invite partners to use the CBT,” Adimula said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 75th anniversary ceremonies includes novelty matches, seminar and paper presentations, football matches, memorable tree planting and free medical outreach.

Don advocates more inclusion, digital access, literacy for women

By Bushrah Yusuf-Badmus

A Professor of Rural Sociology at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Janice Olawoye has called for more inclusion, improved Digital access and Literacy for the women gender for economic and personal developments.

Olawoye spoke on Wednesday in Malete during the Launch and Public Awareness Symposium of the institution’s Centre for Gender Studies.

The symposium has it’s theme Gender, Digital Literacy and Sustainable Development: Interrogating Pathways to Inclusion.

Prof. Olawoye said the Gender Digital Divide showed the gaps/differences between men’s, women’s, boy’s and girl’s access and use of technology, the internet and mobile phones, reflecting gender inequalities.

She said women and girls face significantly greater barriers to accessing technology, developing digital skills and utilising the internet than men and boys.

“We have to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

“It is estimated that about 90 percent of jobs worldwide has a digital component, so access to digital financial services has become important for women’s economic empowerment but requires access and ability to use digital services.

“Further to this, there is the need for digital literacy to enable persons to not only have access but be able to utilise the devices and platform to take advantage of these opportunities,” she said.

The don however called for a nexus between gender, digital access and literacy, inclusion and sustainable development for everyone to have equal ability to take advantage of opportunities in this era of digitalisation.

She said as the social dynamics, the technology and the needed skills all change, we must also adjust strategies to promote an inclusive system for all.

In her lead presentation, Dr Omowumi Macaulay- Adeyelure from the University of Lagos, said the three pathways to inclusion namely, education, economic participation and cultural safety must be guaranteed for women to achieve Digital Access and literacy.

She said the capabilities of women are usually constrained by social norms and by scarcity, so interventions must close both the devices gap and the gap in permission and expectations.

In his remarks, KWASU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jimoh Shaykh-Luqman said the institution remained committed to gender equity and inclusion and will continue to provide an enabling environment where men and women can excel in their careers.

“The establishment of the Centre for Gender Studies is a natural extension of the University’s commitment to the advancement and empowerment of women and other vulnerable groups in society.

“The theme of today’s symposium is both timely and relevant because we live in a world where digital technology shapes access to information, education, employment, and participation in public life.

“Yet many people, especially women and other vulnerable groups, still face challenges in accessing digital opportunities and developing digital skills.

“As scholars and practitioners, we must continue to examine these challenges and explore practical solutions that promotes inclusion, equity, and sustainable development,” he said.

The Acting Director, KWASU Centre for Gender Studies, Dr Latifat Olatinwo said the establishment of the Centre reflects the determination to expand the frontiers of knowledge and provide solutions to contemporary societal challenges in gender studies.

She expressed optimism that the Centre would serve as a hub for impactful research, strategic partnerships, capacity building, and intellectual discourse in gender mainstreaming and inclusivity.

Prof. Ambali, who headed the university between 2012 and 2017, was more than an administrator. He was a visionary leader who believed in the power of ideas, discipline, and service. Under his leadership, the university recorded significant milestones in infrastructure, research, and national reputation.

Beyond policies and projects, colleagues and students remember him for his accessibility, his calm  demeanour, infectious wisdom, and his belief in nurturing the next generation.

Born on November 29, 1957, to the family of Mallam Ambali Gidado and Mrs. Husseina Angulu, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali hailed from the Idi Agbede axis of Okeleru Quarters, Ilorin.

Immediately after his national service in 1982, the young Ambali joined the services of the University of Maiduguri as Assistant Lecturer, and by dint of hard work and academic excellence, he became a Professor in 1995.

With the impending expiration of the tenure of Prof. Is-haq Oloyede and the advertisement of the vacancy for the position of Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin in April 2012, the consummate veterinarian, showed interest in the job Prof. Ambali was one of the 14 eminent Professors that turned in their application letters.

After a rigorous interview session, Prof. Ambali was adjudged the most suitable, and he was recommended by the Council/Senate Selection Board for appointment. The University Council, thereafter, ratified the Selection Board’s recommendation on July 25, 2012.

The erudite scholar, who still engaged in active teaching at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ilorin after his vice chancellorship tenure, was until his death the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete.

The late Prof. Ambali understood that a great university is built on both scholarship and character.

At 68, his work here is done, but his legacy will continue to live after him. The policies he signed, the staff he mentored, and the students he inspired would continue to speak for him.

Adieu, Prof. Ambali. There goes a great Unilorite, an embodiment of hard work, an epitome of humility, and a quintessential humanist.

May Allah accept his return, forgive his shortcomings, comfort the family he left behind, and make Aljannah Fridaous his perpetual abode.
