The Management of Kwara Polytechnic, Ilorin, has awarded a full scholarship and living stipend to Miss Maryam Zakariyau, an HND I Marketing student with a disability who was on the verge of dropping out due to financial hardship.
The institution said the intervention was aimed at enabling the student to complete her academic programme without financial constraints.
This is contained in a statement issued in Ilorin on Wednesday by the Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. AbdulJimoh Mohammed.
According to the statement, the Rector announced the intervention during a visit by representatives of students with disabilities to his office.
Mohammed said the scholarship formed part of Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s initiative to improve the welfare of persons with disabilities in the state.
He reaffirmed Polytechnic’s commitment to promoting an inclusive learning environment, adding that no student should be denied access to education because of financial challenges.
The Rector said Maryam’s situation deeply moved the management, leading to the prompt approval of the scholarship.
He added that the beneficiary would also receive a living stipend to cater for her daily expenses throughout her programme.
Mohammed assured students with disabilities that the management would continue to consider their requests and introduce additional welfare initiatives to improve their academic experience and general well-being.
Earlier, speaking on behalf of the beneficiary and the Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Abdulazeez Muideen, a student of the Polytechnic, expressed appreciation to the Management for what he described as its compassionate and prompt intervention.
He described the scholarship as a life-changing gesture that had lifted a significant financial burden from the student and her family.
Muideen appealed to the management to improve accessibility to campus buildings and provide enhanced educational support for students with disabilities.
He also urged the institution to approve the establishment of a formal association for students with disabilities to promote their collective interests and provide a platform for advocacy.
