The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara Command has arrested a 22-year-old vandal, Idris Ibrahim Kayode, a private security guard attached to the University of Ilorin.
Mr Ayoola Shola, Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the command told newsmen in Ilorin that the arrest was in line with its Corps mandate to protect Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, as well as prosecute anyone caught vandalizing government assets.
Shola said that the command would prosecute anyone found vandalizing armoured cables, used to power streetlights within the university community.
“The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, December 11, at about 01:33 hours, by local vigilantes, who caught him red-handed vandalizing the armoured cables.
“He was promptly handed over to the NSCDC for further investigation,” PRO said.
The State Commandant, Dr Umar Muhammed ordered further investigation into the matter, after which the suspect would be charged to court.
The Commandant thereby appeal to the people of Kwara to assist NSCDC and other security agencies in clearing criminal elements and reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest security agencies.
An expert, Dr Tahjudeen Bolaji, Chairman, Association of Model Islamic Schools, Kwara chapter has called on parents to collaborate with teachers in training their children, for a better future.
Dr Bolaji made the call while speaking with AL-AL-WASEELAH NEWS in Ilorin, on Tuesday.
He said that some of the challenges private schools are experiencing was abrupt removal of students from school, by parents, due to hike in school fees or teacher mode of correcting students.
He explained that some parents decides to withdraw their children in school without prior notice, to attend other private schools or public schools. Bolaji, also t
he Proprietor of Al-Ikhlas Schools, Ilorin said that some parents change children schools every two years, which would affect such student educational standard.
“This is wrong and could be curb, if there is a law that mandate transfer student to provide a letter from their former school, before they can be enrolled in a new school,” he said.
The Chairman explained that the major reason for the increase in school fees was as a result of hike in fuel price, which he said affected lots of goods’ price.
He said that private school owners have lots of things to cater for in school environment, as well as fueling of school bus and payment of teachers and non teaching staff salaries.
“Private schools need to meet up with their expected standard, by providing necessary things and pay staff salary promptly, for them to be productive,” he said.
The expert spoke on need to register private schools before been in operation, with Cooperate Affairs Commission and the state Ministry of Education, in order to be well qualified.
He stated that the lowest qualification of teachers in his school was NCE, saying that it was the standard set by the Ministry, adding that there are also graduate of BSC and MSC.
The chairman however said that he always encourage his teachers to further their education, especially the NCE holders, saying that seven of his teachers are almost through with their degree program.
“There is no limit to learning, especially for teachers that impact knowledge on young ones, so I always encourage my teachers to acquire degree and masters.
“All they need to do is to get some one who will relieve them during the period of study and they will reach an agreement on how to share the salary, to make things easier,” he said.
The proprietor said that his school does not allow bullying, especially by senior students, saying that it affects learners education and could even results to death of students.
He said that it should be written in all the rules and regulations of schools that bullying is not allowed and anybody caught in the act would be punished and such person’s name would be written in black book.
Bolaji further said that assault was not allowed in his school, saying that all the teachers had been cautioned against severe beating and punishment.
He, however, said that learning without good character is a waste of time, so there was need to discipline students, but in a moderate way that would not result to assault.
“Once parents entrust their children with us, it is our responsibility to train them accordingly and any child that violates the rules and regulations will be corrected accordingly.
“We sometimes have issues with parents interfering in our mode of training learners and such parents are counselled and if they persist, we hand over their children back to them,” he said.
An Area Court sitting at Centre-Igboro, Ilorin has dissolved the Islamic marriage between Rasheedat Abeje and Suleiman Adeyi, both of Okelele Area, Ilorin after 10 years.
The Presiding Judge, Idris Etsu made the ruling after the Bailiff of the court deposed to an affidavit on the agreement of the husband to dissolve the marriage.
“The Bailiff said that he called the husband on phone and he said that he is no more interested in the marriage,” he said.
The court thereby dissolved the Islamic marriage between the two parties.
Etsu ordered that the woman should observe three months iddah (waiting) period before she could remarry again.
The court granted the mother custody of the only child in the marriage.
Earlier, the wife filled for divorce, custody and maintenance fees of N20,000 monthly, due to lack of love, affection and care.
She, however, told the court that the husband was not responsible and does not care for them, therefore agreed to take full responsibility of the child.

The management of Kwara University Teaching Hospital Ilorin has announced its intention to decongest mortuary in two weeks time.
The Head of the Corporate Affairs Unit of the hospital, Mr Kamaldeen Aliagan made this known to newsmen on Sunday, in Ilorin.
Aliagan said that the hospital management has sent out messages, inviting people to claim the bodies of their deceased relatives.
“The management of State University Teaching Hospital wishes to announce to the general public that its mortuary is filled beyond capacity with no available space due to unclaimed bodies.
“The management, therefore, implores the general public to come and retrieve the bodies of their relatives and loved ones within the next two weeks from the time of this announcement.
“After which the management will consider decongestion through mass burial,” Aliagan said.

A nine-year-old child reportedly set a three-bedroom bungalow on fire in one of the state government housing estates in Ilorin, Kwara state capital.
The fire erupted at the bungalow located at No 52, Mandate 2 Housing Estate in the Ilorin West, Local Government Area.
The fire was reported to have been caused by a child who was playing with matches.
The child, according to the State Fire Service, was playing with matches, which ignited a mattress in the compound and escalated the blaze.
It was gathered that the fire completely destroyed a bedroom, kitchen and the balcony of the building.
Sources said that the mother of the boy was outside the building attending to some visitors when neighbours raised the alarm of heavy smoke from the bungalow.
The fire service confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists and signed by Head of Media and Publicity, Hassan Adekunle.
Adekunle said, “The State Fire Service responded to a fire outbreak on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at No. 52 Mandate Housing Estate, Ilorin, where a three-bedroom flat was nearly destroyed.
“The fire was caused by a nine-year-old child playing with matches, which ignited a mattress and escalated the blaze.”
The fire service, however, advised parents and guardians to educate their children on the dangers of playing with fire.
The service warned that parents should keep matches, lighters, and other flammable materials out of the reach of children.
“We strongly urge the public to prioritise safety at all times, especially as children spend their holiday at home with limited supervision while many parents are at work.
“Parents and guardians are advised to be vigilant of their children,” he said.
Adekunle stressed that as the festive season approach, parents should educate their children on the dangers of firecrackers, commonly known as bangers.
“Parents must educate their children on the dangers of firecrackers and ensure they are used responsibly, if at all.
“Let us all work together to prevent such tragedies this festive season,” the Media Head said.

“The death of Sheikh Ajani Bello is, indeed, a national loss. Our commiserations go to the people and government of Oyo State, the Ansar-Ud-Deen family worldwide, and the Muslim community as a whole,” the Governor said.
