Unilorin Chief Imam urges Muslims to repay their missed Ramadan fast

By: Mujidat Oyewole

The Chief Imam of University of Ilorin Central Mosque, Prof. Nasir Abdus-Salam has called on all Muslims to repay all the fasting they missed during the month of Ramadan.

The Chief Imam made the call on Friday in Unilorin, during the first Jummah prayer, after Ramadan.

He called on Muslims to search their heart and remember the number of fasting they missed during the month of Ramadan and try to repay them.

The Scholar mentioned some of those that could not fast during Ramadan and should pay back after Ramadan, like the sick ones, those on journey, menstruating women and those that deliberately missed it.

He stressed that fasting during the month of Ramadan is compulsory for all Muslims, except those that are exempted from fasting, like the old ones and others, as mentioned above.

“Anybody that deliberately refused to fast during Ramadan, without any reason is expected to fast for two months consecutively or feed a poor person for 60 days.

“This is because refusal to fast during the month of Ramadan deliberately is a major sin and whoever refused to repent will have a case to settle with Almighty Allah,” he said.

The Chief Imam narrated that during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) the followers of Islam usually pray continuously after Ramadan, in order for their fasting to be accepted by Almighty Allah.

Abdus-Salam said that even when a Muslim do all that was expected, there was need to pray for the act of worship to be accepted, because it is only Almighty Allah that decide which prayer to accept.

“This is the reason why Muslims needs to continue the good acts even after Ramadan in order to ask for Almighty Allah’s mercy and seek for more.

“The Prophet said; do good deeds properly, moderately and sincerely because your good deeds will not be enough to qualify you to enter paradise, except who Almighty Allah shows His mercy.

“We pray Almighty Allah to forgive and pardon us in the last Ramadan and grant us the opportunity to witness many more on earth,” he said.

By: Mujidat Oyewole

The cleric gave the advice during the Eid-el-Fitr Khutbah (sermon) titled: ‘Eid Celebrations between Joys and Sorrows,’ held at the Unilorin Mosque praying ground on Sunday.

“The month should have softened our hearts, infused tolerance, love, and a sense of forgiveness into us, sufficient enough to reconcile differences with others.

“That explains why believers willingly fast, endure long prayers, and recite the Holy Qur’an in spite of hardships, hoping for the joy of the hereafter.

“There is no joyful occasion in life that is free from trials and tribulations,” AbdulSalam said.

He congratulated all Muslims on completing the month of spiritual devotion, which transformed them through piety, compassion, and obedience to Allah’s commandments.

“O Allah! We have fasted to the best of our ability. Let our efforts please You and accept our good deeds as worthy of your reward.

“Thirst is quenched, hunger has vanished, and the reward for sacrifices is certain for obedient servants.

“Allah has promised joyful moments in this life and the hereafter as rewards for diligent fasting, as stated in the Hadith of Abu Huraira and Abu Sa’id,” he said.

AbdulSalam explained that Allah intertwined joy and sorrow, fear and tranquillity, peace and war, loss and gain, as well as defeat and victory.

“No action is accidental. Every deed undertaken by believers has results,” he said.

By: Mujidat Oyewole

Kwara State has indicated interest in hosting the National Sports Festival, NSF, for 2026, as disclosed by Coach Bola Mogaji, Executive Chairman, Kwara Sports Commission, KSC on Friday.

Coach Mogaji made the statement during the official presentation of the Torch of Unity ahead the forthcoming NSF in Ogun state.

“We have all the facility needed to host the tournament and I can say that Kwara will be bidding to host the next edition of the sports festival,” said Mogaji.

The Godwin Agbazika Innih Stadium, Ilorin, has seen major reconstructions to its facilities in recent times.

Aside it’s major indoor Sports Hall seeing major repairs, the stadium facility now has spanking new squash courts first of its kind in Africa.

Also, a world class table tennis arena and many other facelifts currently ongoing.

“I dare say that our facility is better than that of the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja because it’s the only stadium where you can host a major competition and not leave the premises.

“You can’t do that in Abuja because at some point, you will leave the main stadium for Package B,” Mogaji said.

The Torch of Unity was presented to the Deputy Governor, Kayode Alabi at the Ahmadu Bello House, Kwara Government House, Ilorin.

Alabi, speaking on behalf of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq underscored the importance of sports in Nation building.

“Its unifying force is second to none and as a state government, we are keen in supporting it,” he said.

The Torch of Unity is a symbolic flame that is carried around the states of Nigeria before the National Sports Festival (NSF).

It represents peace, unity, and the spirit of sportsmanship among the diverse ethnic and cultural groups in the country.

It promotes national unity by passing through all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It also raises awareness about the upcoming National Sports Festival and inspires athletes and citizens by fostering a spirit of competition and cooperation.

Normally, the Nigerian President or the Minister of Sports lights the Torch of Unity at a ceremonial event.

It then travels through the states, usually carried by athletes, sports officials, and government representatives.

The torch arrives at the host state just before the opening ceremony, marking the official commencement of the festival.

Don calls for establishment of theatre performing company

By: Mujidat Oyewole
An expert, Prof. Segun Oyewo, Department of Performing and Film Arts, University of Ilorin has called for the establishment of theatre performing company for teaching, research and community services.

Oyewo made the call during the 276th Inaugural Lecture, titled “Imagine a world without theatre and it’s realities on the stage and the environments in Nigeria”.

He therefore suggested the establishment of a performing company to compliment the academic arm and its tight academic schedule for teaching support unit, research and community services and revenue yielding theatre.

Also, the establishment of a finishing school, for employability of theatre graduates and the Professional Theatre Associations should serve as regulatory bodies to address the issue of liberal arts.

The expert said that there was need for advocacy for the strong commitment of the practitioners, which could be bound by signing of ‘professional oath’ to foster unity among professional art bodies.

“There is a strong need to use theatre in exploring links and connections within the African Diaspora, for the preservation of African culture, by signing active MoU among theatre competitions.

“This is to make African cultural studies compulsory for all categories of students in African university curricular, to make the theatre embody the spirit of unity in diversity within Africans in diaspora,” he said.

Oyewo said that there is a saying that ‘an artless society is a heartless society’ which highlights the significance of arts, including theatre, in bringing emotional depth, empathy and humanity to society.

“Without art, a society risks becoming soulless and disconnected. We can not fathom a world without theatre, because theatre has the power to educate, entertain and inspire.

“Theatre Arts bring people together, spark important conversations and provide a platform for self-expression.

“Without theatre, our world would be dull, less empathetic and less connected.

“Nigeria without theatre would lose a vital part of its cultural identity and creative expression,” he said.

The Don argued that theatre plays a significant role in preserving and promoting culture, tradition and history, saying that without theatre there would be less creative expression.

“Theatre often serve as a platform for social commentary, activism and advocacy, which will be severely diminished without theatre.

“A major rationale for theatre in local, national and cultural relations is  that theatre can be one means of healing the tragic situations, such as wars, hunger, poverty, confronting the world,” he said.

Oyewo said that a toxic environment negatively affects the theatre far more than it affects the other aspects of the society.

He noted that theatre also suffers severely in toxic environment, but from history, it’s resilience to bounce back stronger is legendary, giving theatre and practitioners a perceived sense of invisibility, rightly or wrongly.

The Don stressed that it was unimaginable for theatre to die, because it’s death will bring great cataclysm to the society, therefore theatre must survive, because, theatre is an essential aspect of life.

“The death of theatre is in the theatre, when it degenerates into sheer entertainment, show business, emphasising the licentious and the banal and obliterating good theatre, then it can mortify.

“We have seen theatre in its various form; live theatre and in the media and come to the conclusion that Arts management holds the panacea for sustenance of theatre in its positive form.

“This is by organising and producing programmes that will strike a balance between commercial reality and social responsibility, taking the various environments of its existence in Nigeria into consideration,” Oyewo said.

He therefore called on relevant governmental and non-governmental organisations to embark on digitalisation of theatre production, resource materials and cultural festivals.

Also, exhibiting them in schools, youth centres and museums of arts and antiquities to promote and transmit culture.
